Anthony Emrold Phillip aka 'Brother Valentino' launched his latest compact disc entitled, "One Day Soon", at the Mas Camp Pub on Wednesday, 5th April, 2006. There to support him were some of his closest friends and associates including 'Soft Touch', Karega Mandela, 'Brother Resistance', 'Black Stalin', 'Conqueror' and reigning Calypso Monarch 'Luta', all of whom performed that night.
The disc, which is a mix of new and old songs includes Valentino's tribute to the Pan Fraternity: "Pan From The West", "True Opposition", "Vision", "Where Kaiso Went", "Birds That Fly High", and "Merry Monarch".
Starting the show was Calypsonian 'Soft Touch' who gave three solid performances, followed by the three score plus ten year old 'Conqueror' who performed the song that made him the 1966 Calypso Monarch Runner-up, "Webster's Dictionary". His physical outlook and his energetic antics disguised any evidence of old age. Following this was a grand performance by Karega Mandela who urged the audience to "Never Surrender".
Also gracing the stage was the 2006 Calypso Monarch 'Luta' who explained that a major impetus for his hit this year, "Kaiso, Kaiso", was the shock that Valentino's song, "Where Calypso Went", did not carry him into Finals of a previous Calypso Monarch Finals.
Performing at his usual best was 'Brother Resistance' who sang a powerful piece entitled, "Can I Have a Witness". After this performance, 'Brother Resistance' spoke about the inequity within the present economic system, and intimated that despite the fact that the high oil and gas prices procure enormous cash flow into the country, 400,000 Trinbagonians still live below the poverty line. Resistance's address on the social imbalance in the country led into his song 'Down Below'.
Brother Resistance then made the way for 'Valentino' who started with the song "True Opposition", then went into an up-tempo reggae version of "Birds That Fly High". He then sang "Where Kaiso Went" (which is one of his lesser played but excellent Calypsos), the ever enduring "Stay Up Zimbabwe" which was also well received by the audience, followed by the tune, "Band From The West".
Two highlights of 'Valley's' (as he is called by other Calypsonians) performance were the magnificent renditions of "Life Is a Stage" and the impromptu performance of "Dis Place Nice", for which he received standing ovations.
The Calypsonians that performed on this auspicious occasion were backed for most of the night by the Kelly Green and Harmony Orchestra except for the last performance when two members of Roy Cape All Stars replaced members of Harmony to back the Black Stalin who was the last artist to perform. The Black Stalin began with his popular hit "We Can Make It if We Try", continuing with "Wait Dorothy Wait" and finally ending the memorable occasion with the song "Bun Dem".
