The opening night of the Klassic Ruso Calypso Tent took place on Friday 19th January, 2007, at TUCO North Zone's quarters, Kavemar Pub on Henry Street, Port of Spain. The venue, which was luxuriously furnished, was filled with Calypso enthusiasts who came out to hear good Kaiso music.
The Klassic Ruso cast that night included many talented Calypsonians such as Cuthbert 'Typher' Blackett, Tammico 'Spicey' Moore and Natasha 'Sexy Suzy' Nurse. Also present on the opening night were Calypso veterans such as Anthony 'Almanac' Francis, Anthony 'All Rounder' Hendrickson, Kenroy 'Black Prince' Smith and Kelvin 'Mighty Duke' Pope.
TUCO North Zone had sworn that their show would be a phenomenal experience and they must be commended for living up to their word.
The programme began with a benediction by Fr. Clyde Harvey, followed by greetings from the host, Mr. Rudolph Ottley.
Mr. Mark 'Contender' John addressed the crowd stating that the Klassic Ruso promises an environment for good and enjoyable Calypso and assured the gathering that they would experience a great diversity of Calypso music for 2007.
Senator the Honourable Joan Yuille-Williams, Minister of Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs addressed the Klassic Ruso crowd strongly advising them as well as the Calypso artistes to preserve the Calypso art form because within it contains our history. Calypsonians, she intimated, therefore have a duty to keep Calypso alive because if it dies, our history and the backbone of our society would be lost.
The Minister also mentioned that the Government of Trinidad and Tobago is still ready to give TUCO North Zone another facility and pleaded with them to accept it. This new facility promises to be more spacious than their current location and more conducive to a work environment.
The President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago also spoke to the gathering stating that he was pleased to be invited to the Klassic Ruso Calypso Tent which has remained true to the Calypso art form stressing good melody and powerful lyrics.
According to the President of the Republic, TUCO North Zone tent has grown from a fledgling organization to one that is the better or equal half of any other Calypso tent in the land. He recognized the dynamic cast of the Klassic Ruso Tent, which includes icons such as Kelvin 'Mighty Duke' Pope, the illustrious Lady Wonder and the humorous MC, Mr. Hotfoot. He ended by reassuring the audience that Calypso is not a dying art form but stressed that there is still work to be done in order to keep it alive indefinitely.
Also addressing the audience were Mr. Robert 'Mighty Trini' Elias and Mr. Robert 'Robbie G' Deene with the vote of thanks.
Following these addresses, the Calypsonians, backed by the Ed Watson Band and the Brass Circle, entertained the crowd with infectious melodies and intelligent as well as facetious lyrics. They are as follows:
