The National Action Cultural Committee (NACC) held the prize-giving function for their 24th Annual Calypso Young King Competition at the National Library in Port of Spain on Tuesday 12th August, 2008. For persons who missed the Young King show that was held in the Carnival season, this prize-giving event was a way of being exposed to the competitors as they sung two verses and a chorus from their compositions. Calypsonians were backed up by the capable Earl Knights and Services Brass.
Anum Bankole delivered the opening address as he highlighted the efforts by the NACC to internationalize the Calypso artform throughout the Caribbean as he highlighted that they are looking at ways to make the show even more exciting in the year 2009. He commended the competitors for the quality and class of their presentations.
Organiser (Leydon Joseph) gave a excellent performance as he rendered his song "Too Much Chemical", a song that lamented the high use of chemicals in the production of various agricultural crops. Kenson Neptune (Ninja) sung "Who to Blame", a song that commented on the tendency to blame males within relationships as he advised that females are just to blame for when relationships go wrong. Tobagonian Opoku Ware gave a Tobagonian take on crime as performed his lyrically strong piece "More Guns".
A guest appearance was made by Cindy Alleyne who did a moving rendition of Ella Andell's Rhythm of a People. Another guest performer was young Ferdinand Smith who impressed the audience with his energetic rendition of his Soca song "Clear the Way".
Fifth placed Alex Gift also known as "Tobago Chalkdust" gave a spirited performance of his song "Its Not Only Crime" which was a detailed exposition of Trinidad and Tobago's contribution to world civilization. Dee Diamond who placed 7th kept the focus on crime as he explored the consequences of the "nah business" attitude of Trinidadians. Walter Taylor who placed sixth in the competition, gave a moving rendition of his song "Sorry", which expressed a father's regret at not being more involved in his son's life.
Another young guest performer, Amrika Mutroo, gave a commendable performance as she rendered her song "The Remedy", a song that emphasized love, peace and unity as solutions to the problems that face the country. Young Necoda Francis and her brother Helon also demonstrated that Calypso is in good hands as they held the attention of the audience with "My Freedom Song" and "Tips" respectively.
Veteran Calypsonian Funny (Donrick Williamson) showed just why he is one of the country's most entertaining Calypsonians as he had the audience in stitches with his song "Bababadaba" revolved around the Trini tendency to vocalize and mimic the sounds that are made by the Steelpan. He then before performed an even funnier song that explored people's reactions to rumours that he had won the Lottery.
The star of the evening was the winner of the 2008 Young Kings winner Mighty Diamond (Patrick Purcell Lewis) who performed his winning composition "Crime Issues". This song criticized the government's handling of the crime situation by commenting that it seems that the only time they take crime seriously is when it is crime against the state, as he used the 1970 Black Power Uprising and the 1990 Muslimeen coup as examples.
