A stormy meeting of the National Carnival Commission ended yesterday with the shock resignation of its deputy chairman Ainsworth Mohammed who accused Minister of Culture Joan Yuille-Williams of disrespecting the board and unilaterally deciding all plans for Carnival 2007.

NCC sources said Mohammed told the board meeting that he could no longer be part of what he termed “government-sponsored mutiny” against the chairman Kenny De Silva and the directors.

Sources quoted Mohammed, who they report said to his colleagues, “I refuse to even reconsider participation in an environment where the Minister of Culture is leading a conspiracy against the chairman and the board members.”

    Pan Trinbago president Patrick Arnold has denied that there was any clandestine meeting, last Thursday, between the Carnival Special Groups (SIGs) and Minister of Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs; Joan Yuille-Williams.

    Arnold admitted that he and his fellow SIGs leaders did meet with Yuille-Williams, but insisted he had no idea what the Minister wanted to discuss when she called upon him to meet with her. Neither was he aware that the president of TUCO, Michael “Protector” Leggerton and NCBA vice-chairman, Felix Celestine, would also be at the meeting.
