Govt blanks mas in the Savannah

Carnival 2007 will not be held at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port of Spain, this is according to Cabinet sources.

While it is still uncertain where the Carnival competititons will be held, Cabinet sources confirmed yesterday the 2007 mas will be confined to the streets. Culture Minister Joan Yuille-Williams is expected to clear the air on the controversy surrounding plans for Carnival 2007, concerning the venue of the two-day event.

A great deal of uncertainty about Carnival 2007 continued to pour out from officials representing the various Carnival interest groups yesterday, while Yuille-Williams continues private meetings with extended stakeholders of the festival.

While Renwick Brown, secretary of the National Carnival Bands Association (NCBA), was telling Newsday that all plans for Carnival will be revealed by the Minister on Wednesday, Donald Little, president of the National Carnival Development Foundation (NCDF), was meeting with the Minister. Little told Newsday that when he asked the Minister for an invitation to attend the reported Wednesday meeting, he said the Minister’s reply was, “I don’t know anything about any press conference being held on Wednesday.”
